Edem Agbenafa – Kids at Play V, 2022 – Kids at Play Series – Acrylic on Canvas – 46.5 X 59.5 Inches

Edem Agbenafa, born in 1992, is a Ghanaian contemporary artist. His style is characterized by a vivid use of colour, textured brushstrokes, and dynamic compositions. His work often features expressive depictions of human figures, engaged in everyday activities. The artist employs a semi-abstract approach, blending realism with a painterly style that emphasizes movement, emotion, and the atmosphere of the scenes he portrays. His choice of bright, contrasting colours not only draws attention to the subjects but also conveys the warmth, energy, and spirit of African life.

“I aim to capture the essence of human connection and the universality of our experiences. Art, for me, is a bridge that transcends borders, inviting us to see the beauty in the ordinary and the power of our collective humanity,” he says.

In Agbenafa’s series “Kids at Play,” he captures the universality of childhood experiences, transcending geographical boundaries. Through this series, he challenges the often negative perceptions of African childhood, portraying it instead as full of joy, creativity, and resilience. His work serves as a visual celebration of the carefree and imaginative world of children, emphasizing the shared humanity that connects all people, regardless of their background.
